Plank can be used in so many variations. You can use plank before your workout as your warm up to activate your core and all of the other muscles by forcing the activation. Then you can also use plank as finisher of your workout.
There is no right or wrong.
Here is a video for one of the plank routine that can be used for your warm up.
Basic work is:
20 second plank
20 second side plank (both side)
20 push ups
The challenge is you are not allowed to put your knees down until you are done with all 3 exercises and repeat 3-4 sets.
If you are getting used to the challenge, see how many sets you can complete without the knees on the floor.
By the way, did you know that push up is an extension of plank? When you do push ups next time, think about it.
