We have certain habits and because of that habits they make people more unique. However, there are certain habits that can cause a lower back pain. Challenging thing about correcting habits are you need to create a new program in your mind and practice regularly.

Wallet in Back Pocket

You'll see habit of keeping the wallet in back pocket mostly in men. Problem is when you sit on it. Whether you have a thick or thin wallet, this will elevate one side of the hip higher. If this happens only once or twice it does not cause any issues, however, when habit is continuing for few years or even few decades body will adjust to the new norm and have a one leg longer than another issue and leading to lower back pain. Because the weight distribution is imbalance people may experience foot, especially arch issue.

Men carry wallet in their back pocket is because men often don't carry purse like women does but want to keep in place where it is safe, which makes sense. However, back issue is still there and can become expensive with visiting doctors and buying orthotics.

For me, I place my wallet in my backpack and lock it in my office while I train. I thought of inside a glove box in the car but felt unsecure. Depending on your situation you may need to be creative about where you can place your wallet beside back pocket.

Crossing Leg While Sitting

This is common in both men and women. Crossing leg after awhile may become comfort and may look cool or attractive. However, just like wallet example there is a consequence in a longer term.

Lets say right leg is crossed over left leg. In order to accomplish this posture, the right inner thigh muscles are shortened or being activated and hip are in stretched position. On top of this, right leg that is crossed is typically slightly elevated. Because of this elevation of leg, hip flexors, mostly top thigh muscles and muscles that connects your inner hip to lower back called psoas muscles get shortened. In longer term the person may have right leg caved in with tight lower back only on right side (from above example).

Try avoid crossing you leg as much as possible.
